My Calling

In order to look at our calling, first we must look at our desires. I have many desires in my life, desires in which I have developed through various experiences and values that have been instilled in me. Though I am a reserved person in nature, I have always excelled in leadership and administrative roles. I enjoy working under strong leaders and this is because I have a genuine passion to learn and to grow. I have a strong desire to learn, to grow, and to teach. I want to work in environments where I can learn, where I can teach others, and where I have the opportunity and resources to grow. I have strong convictions to do what is right no matter what and to stand for what I believe in. I believe that integrity is one of the strongest traits a person has, especially in a professional setting, so I strive to maintain my integrity and remain above reproach. I am strong but also humble. I can rise to leadership positions and stand my ground in a way that does not demean those I am leading. I find this to be an important because leaders should care about the people following them. In order to be an effective leader you must be able to humble yourself to understand the situation your team is in and the struggles they may be facing.
In the professional world, I believe my calling is accounting. I love numbers and math, and I love accuracy. In accounting, I love the way that numbers fit together like a puzzle. Accounting is the language of business. It is logical and beautiful in its simplicity and I love that. I enjoy the fact that an accountant can look at a business and decide what decisions need to be made. It is the framework of a company and it allows companies to grow and become more profitable.
Beyond the basics of accounting, I feel that my calling in this field is looking out for the interests of others. This makes accuracy so important because we are dealing with people’s hard earned money so I want to help others become financially successful.
As is the story for most Americans my age, growing up in a middle class family I lived a comfortable life, but during the recession my dad lost his job and my parents faced some financially difficult times. Because of this I feel a strong desire to help people and companies reach financial security and make the right decisions to be successful. I want to teach people the right financial decisions, learn more myself, and grow. I feel a genuine calling and conviction to help others.
I know that growing up, it was a struggle for me to figure out what God's calling was on my life, and someone once told me that maybe it is not a specific calling to something so conventional. Think about the things you love, the things you are passionate about, the things you enjoy, the things you are good at. I think that when you look at those things you begin to see where your calling lies. I have always felt a calling to help people and I assumed that it was becoming a doctor (because doctors help people right?), but I wasn't good at that and I didn't enjoy it. I enjoy accounting, I love numbers, and I am good at it. God can use you anywhere so don't feel the pressure to fit into a mold that isn't made for you.
